Music has always been my compass, for as long as I can remember. It’s been my mirror when I was afraid to see my reflection, and sometimes the only voice that made sense — speaking to me with kindness when nothing else could. No matter what or why, it has always been a lifeline.

When I was growing up, I was always armed with blank cassette tapes and my boom box, waiting to hit record at just the right moment so I could have the song when I wanted it. Back then, you hoped the DJ didn’t talk at the end and ruin your recording, forcing you to start over the next time it played. Either way, the songs on a mixed tape were always personal — and if someone gave you a mixed tape they made, you knew you were special to them in one way or another.

This is where I keep the songs that speak to me — whether they became a chapter in The Day Music Spoke to Me series, a playlist for a season of life, or just the soundtrack to my life for moments I can’t forget.
